The Community Council serves the communities of Penmachno and Cwm Penmachno, a rural area within the upper reaches of the Conwy valley where the slate industry was very important at one time. According to the 2021 census, the population of Bro Machno was 629 – up from 617 in 2011 and this about a third of what the population was towards the end of the nineteenth century. The 2021 census shows that almost 60% of people here can speak, read or write in Welsh. Penmachno Parish Council was established in 1894 and, contrary to the general practice of that era, conducted its business through the medium of Welsh from the start. Following local government re-organisation in 1974, Bro Machno Community Council came into being.
